Most people have either heard of or played popular sports like soccer as an extracurricular activity or a favorite pastime, but how about indoor soccer? Yoga? Zumba? Frisbee?

Less typical sports are often overlooked. As a result, unconventional sports are less schedule intensive, and less exclusive.

Students who do not necessarily have time in their schedules find unconventional sports a less time-consuming alternative.

Wow—what does senior night mean to me—a parent? It is not me who is being celebrated and yet it feels as if it is my celebration. It is a celebration of all those years of carpooling to practice, nursing sports injuries, watching and guiding as my athlete made tough choices and many sacrifices for the sport he or she loved. As a parent it is a celebration of all that is right it sports, the teamwork, camaraderie, sportsmanship, perseverance, dedication and hard work.

The dance team won two second place trophies with its hip-hop and pom routines at the national cheer and dance competition in Hershey, Pennsylvania on April 21.

“It was really great bonding time for all of us,” sophomore Annie Bryan said.

The team performed two routines at the competition. Pom routines include elements of jazz dance, with the addition of pom-poms.

“We were judged by a panel of about ten judges who based their scores on our moves, our technique, our facials, our energy and our cohesion as a team,” junior Lexie Tsantes said.

The Activities Office organized its second ever Signing Day for graduating seniors being accepted to colleges to play sports on April 26. At the event, students were acknowledged by school faculty and coaches for committing to play at their respective schools.

“I had been talking to a couple of schools that I liked academically but Delaware was beautiful and close to home and the head field hockey coach was really friendly and they asked me to play for them in November,” said senior Maddie O’Beirne, a center midfielder who signed to play field hockey.

Throughout the season, baseball’s batting lineup evolved so that the crowd saw the same starting four players lead the team during the first inning.

Beginning with three left-handed hitters, each player had been carefully selected by his abilities to play a specific role in the lineup.

Senior Michael Nassoiy, the starting center fielder, batted first in the lineup.

Nassoiy, a third year varsity player for Marshall, undoubtedly set the offensive tone for the rest of his team.

Recognizing this pressure, he took the outlook that “failure is not an option.”

The girls varsity soccer team played strongly against Madison on April 20, drawing with a score of 0-0.

“[The girls] were competitive,” girls varsity soccer head coach Ann Germain said.
The game went into double overtime, each five minutes long.

“We just need to work on communicating better,” freshman Caitlin Dickson said.
“We’re pretty strong on defense,” junior Ayumi Matsuda said. “Our main weakness though is pushing up on offense like creating space and taking shots.”

The team has about ten new varsity players, according to Matsuda.

The varsity and JV softball teams, led by head coaches John Reina and Stephanie Shaker, respectively, are in the midst of a season-long challenge to prove themselves.

The varsity team is working to achieve fourth place in the district in order to qualify for regionals.

“First, second, third place are all pretty set with Madison, McLean and Stone Bridge,” shortstop Kayla Marsh, senior, said. “But fourth place is really up for anyone.”

The varsity team is currently 6-5.

“It’s going to [be] really tough,” Marsh said about the team’s goal of getting fourth in the district.

The girls lacrosse team is pushing to finish its regular season strong. It has one of its best records in school history following a loss to 15-5 loss to Langley on April 19.

Marshall’s 8-3 record includes wins over strong teams, such as its 15-2 victory over South Lakes and Marshall’s first ever win over Stone Bridge High School.

The Statesmen played McLean on April 23, the team’s Senior Night. Results were not available by press time.

April Reinhart said before the game that “the seniors are expecting to dominate and go out with a bang.”

The boys lacrosse team is frustrated with its 1-11 record.

The Statesmen lost to Langley High School 11-14 last Thursday.With their loss by only three goals to the first in the district, lacrosse powerhouse Langley, the game left the team optimistic and looking forward to its upcoming matches.

The loss comes after Marshall’s 14-4 loss to Stone Bridge High School last Tuesday, despite a strong first start in goal by senior James Tickner.

Captain Greyson Smith, senior, thinks that the team played poorly in that game.
