The Intel International Science and Engineering Fair is the largest international pre-college science fair in the world, hosting students from 70 countries, regions and territories each year.
Held from May 12 to May 17 in Phoenix, Ariz., the fair was attended by juniors Aaron Aguhob and Supraja Chitarri, who were among 1,500 participants from all corners of the globe showcasing experiments. Chittari won third place in the animal science category.
Facebook Chief Operating Officer Sheryl Sandberg’s book Lean In has held the top of the nonfiction bestseller list for eight consecutive weeks. Her treatise on modern feminism is being read and discussed everywhere.
Through personal anecdotes and scientific research, Sandberg supports her argument for increased female engagement in the workforce. While her stories and research enlighten, her arguments can feel a bit cliché, a bit vague. Her titular recommendation to “lean in” is the vaguest recommendation of all.
Imagine spring break in Rio de Janeiro, Brazil. Sandy beaches, beautiful sunsets and endless sight-seeing. The reality: conference rooms, crisp collars, notepads, pens and lectures. I was gifted with the most eye-opening and unexpected trip of a lifetime.
A few weeks ago some students were with me after school completing an essay. When finished, one student expressed dismay at how far Marshall High School has dropped in the U.S. News and World Report rankings. Almost everyone has had a point in their life where they think their parents didn’t provide enough leniency, and who’s to say you’re wrong? Between our social lives and school work, where’s the fine line barrier of personal space?
Academic:
In our academics it’s important for our guardians to make sure we aren’t failing out of high school. What is not their job, however, is to do all of our homework and projects for us. Once we graduate, we can’t be phoning up Mom when we can’t solve a math problem or need help with an essay.
After finishing their IB exams, now-completed IB classes lapse into some combination of stupor, laptops and movies. Those teachers who try to continue teaching in their previous style are met with massive resistance. However, as IB exams wrap up, seniors and some juniors still have a full six weeks of school left. Why let this time go to waste?
Whether they were part of the planning committee or simply comparing dresses, both juniors and seniors prepared for this year’s prom well in advance.The dance was on May 18, and was held at the Fairview Marriott Hotel.
“We picked a good location,” class of 2014 executive board member and junior Ann Bryan said. “We’ve only had prom once at the Fairview Marriott, and it’s a really nice hotel.”
As always, the dance was planned by the junior class. This year, the dance’s theme was Las Vegas.
Dr. Karen Garza, the future superintendent of FCPS, outlined her policy of community outreach during a conference call on May 8, when members of newspaper staffs from Fairfax County schools had the chance to speak to Garza about her vision for the county.
During the call Garza informed her interviewers that, even from her home in Houston, she had heard of FCPS due to its size and good reputation.
However, Garza acknowledges that it will take time to become familiar with the new area. “The first thing I need to do is learn about the school system and the community,” Garza said.
The annual IB Art Show, which started on April 22 and concluded on April 26, featured the portfolios of IB art students over the course of the two years they took the IB art class.
IB Visual Arts teacher Nicole Walter organized the art show and guided the students through the process.
The art show doubled as an IB exam. Despite the fact that the projects are being graded on a rubric, students were still encouraged to incorporate creativity and personal touches.
“One of the scoring criteria for IB Visual Arts is that the students create personally relevant work,” said Walter.
