Two days. That’s how long arguably the biggest hyped home game since the 2006 state appearance Cinderella run was delayed. That was because of a “snow” warning. All of Marshall had been depressed because of this delay. So much hype, so much waiting had been in preparation of this day, and now that excitement would have to wait another two days.
I had been particularly sad because I had been preparing for this game for the past two days. I had worn the same shirt that I had worn when we beat Madison at Madison and the same tie as well. I’m a little superstitious like that. But now, two days later, there was no inclement weather to cancel the game. As the day neared toward game time, my excitement once again began to rise.
To sweep Madison would bring about a great feeling, as they were our biggest rival. The games were intense, with the crowds from both schools going crazy. In our last game against them, we had comeback down 10 in the second half to beat them. Neither side wanted to lose, as these games mean a lot. I, being the announcer, would have to scream into the microphone. I could hardly wait.
The games leading up to the Varsity game were great hype builders. Freshmen easily won. JV came back down 10 in the 3rd quarter to win. The results created a feeling of anticipation. Not only beating Madison would be great, but to sweep them would be a great feeling. The game readily approached. Tip off finally got underway. The crowds immediately started buzzing with excitement. Our varsity team started off very well and led after the first half. I had a lot of fun screaming into the microphone, especially my customary “Your Statesmen!” The Madison crowd, which, there had not been many people to start with, was not getting into the game. The Marshall Mob had been doing its job.
We continue to play well in the second half, even though Madison made a little bit of a run. I started to get a little nervous, as I always do in the second half when the game is on the line. The crowd kept on encouraging the players, and their positive feedback paid off. Christian Cameron hit a big three-pointer in the fourth quarter, and that sealed the game. I got fired up, and that reflected in the microphone. We were able to sweep Madison!
As I look back on the successful boys’ basketball season, this sweep of Madison sticks out. It was without a doubt the sweetest win. There could not have been a more perfect night. The two-day delay only added more hype to a home game that would be remembered for ages. The Marshall Mob, on their feet, cheering us on, and taking the Madison Crowd out of the game. This was a night to remember for ages.
