Holding a job as a student can be challenging with all the responsibilities you need to handle at once. However, being able to be part of the work field at a younger age can give you numerous benefits in the long run.
Junior Lucas Davila shares his experience working at Ben and Jerry’s, scooping ice cream and serving customers.
“I love my experience so far there, I’ve had many friends and families come and visit me,” Davila said. “It’s a lot of fun, but also very busy during summer.”
Working there for about a year, he’s mostly held the same position.
“I scoop ice cream for customers, our most popular flavors being the classic chocolate or vanilla,” Davila said.
He got his job from a project his family has been working on which many may recognize.
My family and I were friends with the owners, and also worked with them for our family ‘Rustic Love’ nonprofit,” Davila said.
Working at an ice cream shop has let Davila see some things differently.
“[Working here] has taught me to see that there are many different types of people in this community,” said Davila. “From skinny to chubby to nice to mean, they all come here for one thing and it’s ice cream, it shows that one thing humans can agree on is ice cream.”
However, every positive aspect has its negative counterpart.
“Mean parents and customers come by sometimes, they can be really stressful and give me a hard time,” Davila said.
Davila gives some insight on why holding a job may be appealing to some students.
“I would recommend starting to get a job and save money because the older you get, the more you spend,” Davila said. “ And also, if you have ideas of what you want to be, you can use your high school work experience to explore your options,” Davila said.
