The Octagon Club made sandwiches for the homeless at St. Mark’s Catholic Church in order to give back to the community.
Members were required to bring one pound of ham, cheese and bread to volunteer.
“I really liked the sandwich making because it is a direct way to help the community,” sophomore and Octagon Club junior officer Teresa Capuano-Rizzo said.
Capuano-Rizzo said she enjoys the service and feels like she is making a difference in the community.
“The sandwiches we make go straight to the homeless shelters, so it feels good to make food you know will go to someone who needs it,” Capuano-Rizzo said.
Although senior and Octagon Club junior officer Rejana Pullarkat wasn’t able to attend the event, she says that those who volunteered contributed to the goal of helping the local community.
“I personally think that the Octagon Club has the ability to help communities both on the local and global scale. With our optimist initiatives such as the sandwich making, DC Central Kitchen, and KEEN school special needs events and other local initiatives, I believe we are helping on a local scale to improve the lives of people in our community,” Pullarkat said. “I also believe we have the power to make a global impact with the letter writing events that we have, in which we express our concerns to our congressmen or organizations over global issues.”
For the people that are not able to participate, the Octagon Club accepts food donations as well. The Octagon Club will volunteer again at St. Mark’s Catholic Church on October 21st.
