When senior Regina Guerrero-Perez shares the story of her journey from Mexico to the United States, the reason for her success in her artistic pursuits becomes clear. Overcoming the difficulties and hardships she endured during the immigration process made art the primary focus of her ambitions for her future. The opportunities that living in the United States offered also helped.
“When I came here, art became more of a possibility for a career,” Regina said. “[Back in Mexico] we didn’t have art electives like we do here.”
She emigrated from Mexico in 2014, but began exploring her artistic abilities even earlier. A career in art, once a dream, becomes a reality as she is currently applying to different art programs that fulfill her desire to major in illustration or fine arts.
“I want to study art, so I’m choosing between illustration and fine arts, but I could do both at VCUarts and mix them for my major,” Geurrero Perez said.
Before moving, Regina didn’t know what to expect.
“I thought school was going to be just like the movie High School Musical,” Guerrero Perez said.
Although she often misses her life in Mexico, but now has a variety of opportunities to pick from.
“One thing that really did change after coming here to the US, is how I looked at my future in terms of college,” Guerrero Perez said. “Living here has given me so many options and opportunities to choose from regarding academics. I like how America is very career-centered and how you have a lot of opportunities. You can chase your dream.”
