Senior Diego Haldeman shaved his head last weekend to promote cancer awareness and send the message that there are always ways of giving back to your community.
“Most people know someone who is or has battled with cancer, and if everyone chipped in a few dollars or helped raise awareness, I know we would be so much closer to eliminating that awful disease,” Haldeman said.
Haldeman said he lost his grandmother and great uncle to cancer at a young age and participates with St. Baldricks, a Childhood Cancer Research Foundation, each year in the hopes of giving back to his community. He originally began shaving his head in seventh grade with a group of friends and teachers.
“St. Baldricks is an organization that funds research into cures and treatments for childhood cancers,” Haldeman said. “They do that by having people pledge to shave their head and then raise funds for the cause by doing so. The shaving of the heads is also to lend support to the children who go bald due to chemotherapy.”
