Freshman Jamie Bol was named the winner of the first photo contest of the year held by the Photo Club, for her submission of raspberries spilling out of a pomegranate juice bottle. She won $10 in cash, as well as the title.

“I did not expect to win, and I was so excited when I did,” Bol said.

The members of the photo club announced the winner of the contest on Nov. 13. Jamie is a member of the Photo club, and started out with an idea of taking a picture of pomegranate seeds, but then changed her plan.

“I was inspired by how the pomegranate juice was 100% pomegranate,” Bol said. “I wanted to show that with pomegranate seeds, but then I couldn’t find any. Then I thought ‘Hey raspberries are pretty cool’ so I used raspberries,” Bol said

Jamie was thrilled to win, and plans to join future contests.

“There will be more contests in the future, and I plan on participating again,” Bol said.

The theme of the contest centered around food, and applicants were required to submit photos that corresponded to the specific theme. The concept was created amongst the Photo club members, and there were no restrictions on which camera could be used.

“Food is the focus because we decided at one of our first meetings that it would be a good first photo contest idea because of its simplicity,” junior and Photo club member Lauren Marsh said.

Marsh said that the photo contest aimed to excite students about Photo club. The photo contest was created for all students, and was not limited to just members of the Photo Club. The contest received a total of 15 submissions.

“[Photo Club] made the photo contest at the end of last year as a fun way to get people involved in the club,” Marsh said.

Photo Club plans to hold other contests throughout the year, and the next one will focus on water.

“We hope to do a contest either monthly or every six weeks,” photography teacher and club sponsor Patrick McDonough said.
