The Model United Nations club took home five awards during their conference at William and Mary from Nov. 11 to 13.
Despite over 2,000 members from all over the country participating, hopes for the conference were high.
“I am confident that we will do well,” sophomore and three year Model UN veteran Rohan Shah said.
“Personally I am really prepared and excited for this year’s conference. Last year we did really well and I placed second in my committee.”
Shah received an award for his representation of Zubeyir Aydar in the Kurdish State Formation Committee.
“The fascinating thing about Model UN is that you are forced to take on whichever position that you are given. It really exposes you to the different viewpoints that the world offers,” Shah said.
First time Model UN participant and sophomore Karolina Hogan’s expectations for the conference were hopeful, despite not having any previous experience in Model UN.
“I’m really excited,” Hogan said. “I’m doing a double delegation with my best friend and we’re going to have a lot of fun.”
Along with partner and sophomore Shadi Nasser, Hogan received an award for representing Israel in the World Conference on Women.
Other participants who won awards were senior Jake Hargrove for his representation of Israel in the UN Environmental Assembly, sophomore Aidan Soule for representing Hon. Jeb Johnson in Obama’s Cabinet and an honorary mention to senior Katie DeLong for participating in the Secretary General’s Ad-hoc Committee on Negotiation.
MUN will travel to the University of Virginia later in the month for another debate. Junior Erin Villaronga expressed confidence that the club will achieve similar results.
“[We’re] a mixture of really strong delegates and new club members so hopefully we can learn stuff from each other or teach the novices some tips and bring home some awards,” Villaronga said.
