The Activities Office has announced Dominic Borello as the new head coach of varsity cheer. Borello, the team’s first-ever male coach, comes with decades of experience in cheer as an athlete, coach and judge.
“Having been a student athlete for the majority of my youth, I can really appreciate what sacrifices are made by each of the athletes to put their team first,” Borello said.
While Borello has coached all levels, he sees certain challenges that arise specifically with coaching high school athletes.
“There are so many technical components involved with tumbling and stunting that make it very difficult to pack all that information into a brief amount of time,” Borello said. “It takes very dedicated and serious athletes to really excel at mastering these skills.”
Borello coached national championship teams, judged high school teams and was a head judge at last year’s state meet.
For Borello, athletes’ perfection of technique is the key to future success.
“This season will really be about perfection before progression,” Borello said. “As a judge for VHSL, I know that teams are more successful with solid technique and simpler elements than teams that are maximizing difficulty with mediocre technique.”
