Cherry Blossom Festival

From March 20 to April 12, drive or take the Metro down to see the scenic cherry blossom trees bloom in D.C. Throughout the festival, there are multiple smaller events like kite flying on March 28, fireworks on April 4, and a parade on April 11 in celebration of the start of spring, which also recognizes an aspect of traditional Japanese culture. Take advantage of this festival, because it’s one of the few events D.C. has that doesn’t revolve around old, crusty historical figures.

Paws in the Park

The cat’s out of the bag! Bring your furry friends to Gaithersburg, Maryland on April 26 for activities that are both puppy- and owner-friendly. Some activities include mile-long walking courses, pet-friendly vendors, live music and food. Paws in the Park has a partnership with the Montgomery Humane Society, with all proceeds going toward providing care and homes for abandoned or abused animals in the greater D.C. area. Past events have brought over a thousand four-legged friends and their owners for this good cause, so don’t miss out.

Sweetlife

If your flower crown-filled Instagram feed didn’t notify you about the all-day Sweetlife Music Festival that occurs every year at Merriweather Post Pavillion, this little blurb is here to help. This year’s line-up includes Kendrick Lamar, Charli XCX, The Weeknd, Marina and the Diamonds and Vance Joy. Come for a blend of indie, hip hop and rock on May 9. You can stroll around the large venue or stage-hop from artist to artist; at the end of the festival, spread out on the lawn for a picnic.

Film Festivals

This spring, D.C. is hosting a multitude of film festivals, like the Korean Film Festival and the Environmental Film Festival, both held in March and April. Similarly, arts and film festival “Nordic Cool” is being held in the Kennedy Center throughout March. This celebration of culture and art is one tell-tale sign that spring is upon D.C.
