Tysons Corner Mall debuted their outdoor extension, appropriately named “The Tysons Plaza,” on the west side of the mall on July 12. The Plaza features new restaurants, lounge chairs, grassy areas, games and candy vendors and directly connects to the Silver Line via an overpass, making the mall easily accessible to visitors from other areas. The Plaza also includes outdoor community activities closely mimicking the atmosphere of the Mosaic District in Merrifield.
Shakin’ it Up with the Shake Shack
If you’re looking to take a break from the same restaurants in the food court and don’t want to spend your entire allowance on movie theater food, head down to the newly-opened Shake Shack for traditional fast food accompanied by one of their famous shakes. While it might not be the healthiest option, it’s an outdoor atmosphere that makes a pleasant change from the crowded mall. Plus, fresh air is considered healthy, right?
Play sound on the playground
A playground complete with monkey bars, see-saws and a slide—and enclosed by a fence—is the perfect place to take hyperactive younger siblings or the annoying kids that you got stuck babysitting. With benches to sit on, places to park a stroller and a separate area for toddlers, this play area does a favor to everyone’s children by providing a safe and remote place for them to play.
Get Your Head in the Game
Like at the Mosaic District, families or groups of friends can play games with enlarged outdoor chess or checkers sets, as well as multiple sets of corn-hole. And there is a fire pit for every group of couches or benches so that people can enjoy the outdoor area despite the cool temperatures. There are also several outlets on the sides of the couches, so you’ll never have to worry about your phone dying.
An Assortment of Activities
The Plaza hosts many different activities, including a summertime a concert series called the “Fresh Artists Concert Series” hosted by 94.7 Fresh FM and free movie nights each Saturday night. On Dec. 5 a Christmas-themed market will be held in the Plaza with crafts, music and food. Starting spring of 2015, a farmers’ market will be held weekly to promote small businesses and farmers. Programs like the “Kids Club,” designed specifically for kids, offer learning opportunities alternating between the first Tuesday and Saturday of each month.
