A new coaching staff hasn’t stopped Varsity volleyball from having a successful season: the team finished with a winning record and their first conference championship in the history of the program.
For the first two weeks of the season, even without official coaches, the girls tried out under the supervision of Coach Biorgiotti, the assistant Varsity coach and only returning member of the coaching staff.
“It was definitely pretty stressful because I was already worried about the whole new coaching staff and then I had to worry about not having any coach there for the first couple of weeks to watch us play and decide who would make the team,” junior Jessica Lussier said.
Along with the new Varsity head coach Dave Becker, the JV and Freshman teams also acquired new coaches. Even without as much practice time as other local high school teams, the Varsity team, as of press time, has a record of 12-5.
Varsity also won a tournament at J.E.B. Stuart HS with three victories on Sept. 27th.
“It was a really great milestone for our team; we were really able to see what our team could accomplish,” sophomore Maddie Choi said.
The team is thrilled with their success, especially given the setbacks in preseason.
“Our three new coaches are perfect for the Marshall volleyball program. Thanks to them, each team has done so well this season,” sophomore Surya Mehta said.
Under the direction of a new coaching staff, the team hopes to grow. However, they will be losing six graduating seniors.
“I think that this year is our peak, but if the rising and current Varsity players continue to play and work hard, we can be just as good or even better,” Mehta said.
The team hopes to capitalize on their talent this year.
“We can definitely win the conference banner this year if we continue working diligently,” Choi said before the team did just that in the Capitol Conference final Nov. 6.
