As a student at Marshall High School, I think that it is very important that students learn how to use modern technology. With the fast, ever-changing world, it is very important to be able to stay current and to keep up with the latest technology.
In today’s world it is necessary, for example, to know how to use a computer to communicate and work on projects. Almost every job description now has the requirement to work with computers, but computers are just the beginning.
In fact, one of the fastest-growing job markets is in technology, like IT and cyber security. Students interested in these careers should be able to take classes in their desired fields in high school, just like future actors are able to take drama classes and future nurses are able to take nursing classes.
In addition to more technology classes, schools should also work on integrating technology into everyday classes, since in most jobs it is necessary to have at least a basic knowledge of the latest technology.
Since I transferred to Marshall in my junior year, I spent my first two years of high school in a private school that did incorporate many different types of technology into the curriculum. For example, the students were given iPads, and we were able to use apps and other features in chemistry class to see an interactive periodic table. For physics, instead of just handing in labs, we also used a website that simulates science labs so that our labs would be free of errors.
Of course, students could and did misuse this technology in the classroom, but the good outweighed the bad. Because my previous school did emphasized technology in the classroom, I feel prepared for the workforce and I am comfortable working with technology.
It is the school’s job to prepare students for the real world, and in that real world there is always changing technology; therefore, schools should be open to using and applying technology in everyday classes.
