Many different sports games can come down to one point, or in the case of soccer, one goal. But in a game like soccer where scoring is much rarer, luck can make the difference.
“One simple mistake can ruin the whole game for you,” junior Willem Lensink said. “Luck does play a role.”
Though it may seem like a disadvantage, senior Ye Htay sees the low scores as a valuable aspect of the game.
“For me, 1-0 in soccer is as entertaining as 100-90 in basketball,” Htay said.
Junior Brian Weiss agrees, adding that though spectators do not see as many goals in soccer, there is plenty of action.
“For the players there is constant action on the field and this makes scoring goals and preventing goals much more valuable,” Weiss said.
While a 5-0 win in a sport like baseball would not turn any heads, the same score in a soccer game suggests complete dominance.
“We all have bad games and sometimes you have to be lucky to score goals to get the win.” Htay said.
Though admitting that luck plays a role, Weiss maintains that the team has the responsibility to play well enough that luck does not affect the overall outcome.
“It isn’t about getting unlucky or another team getting lucky, it’s about how we got ourselves into that position in the first place and how we could’ve dealt with the situation better,” Weiss said.
Evidently, talent and experience are not the only elements that affect the outcome of games.
“I think our team has a lot of potential but we haven’t played well as a team together yet,” Lensink said.
