The varsity softball team has had a strong start this season, going undefeated in the Hayfield spring break tournament.
“The spring break tournament went really well. We won all of our five games and were the champions,” freshman Amelia Ely said.
The softball team played against five teams during the spring break tournament: Thomas Jefferson High School for Science and Technology, South Lakes high school, Woodson High School, West Springfield High School and Hayfield High School.
Winning the tournament provided momentum and hope for the rest of the regular season, as well as the postseason.
“Our goal as a team is to win distracts,” senior Marieka Pierce said. “We all believe we can, we just have to prove it.”
While the tournament did not directly affect the team’s standings, the games help create a standard of play the team can strive for in the future.
“I think the rest of the season will go well if we keep playing like we have been; most of our harder games are over,” junior Katrina Uher said.
With the new conference, the team will get a chance to play different opponents.
“A lot of the teams we have yet to face we haven’t ever played before because of the new conference,” Uher said.
Despite changes like a new coach, the team is able to work together well.
“We have a really good coaching staff and get along with the coaches and each other just fine,” Pierce said.
