Located in the Halstead Square in Merrifield and carrying an assortment of unique pizzas, sandwiches and beverages, the Lost Dog Café is a great place to catch lunch or dinner.
The first thing that struck me was the beautiful artwork featured on the walls and doors. The murals were created by a local artist who comes in once a week to add more. The art is also locally relevant; one wall featured the history of Dunn Loring. This adds a warm feeling to the atmosphere.
The Lost Dog offers many different pizzas ranging from classic cheese to crabmeat. I ordered the white pizza (individual size $9.95) and the burro pie (individual size $10.95) planning ahead to save some for later. The individual pizzas came in four pieces so I ate two pieces of each variation. They offer the usual sizes of pizza small, medium and large.
The white pizza was smothered in mozzarella cheese, parmesan and garlic butter. It was somewhat greasy, but the crust was excellent. The burro pie was also amazing. It featured the same crust as the white pizza, except in whole wheat. The burro pie had a great black bean dip in place of tomato sauce. This pizza was also covered in mozzarella, cheddar cheese, lettuce and pico de gallo (a Mexican salsa). The personal pizzas are quite large so be prepared for leftovers.
The Lost Dog is normally a bit on the pricey side. However, when you come in during happy hour (which is Monday through Friday from 4 to 7), every pizza is two dollars off. At this reduced price, the food is well worth it. Overall, the food was good quality. The cheese was great and the greens were fresh. I would definitely return there.
