Crash. A massive oak tree broke through Isabelle and Sophia Therriault’s home at 2 am.
This tree, “big enough that it would have taken four people to wrap their hands around it,” fell on their house during Hurricane Irene, Isabelle Therriault said. When the loud bang woke up Sophia, she ran upstairs to tell her parents. “I thought [at first] that just the cars in the driveway were hit,” Sophia Therriault said.
The tree hit the bedroom and landed on the Therriault’s parents’ bedroom.
“They were able to get out with only a few cuts and bruises,” Sophia Therriault said.
They had to climb down the tree that destroyed their bedroom in order to get out of the house at which point they came through the front of the house and told every one to get out.
The Therriault’s parents, Wendy and Leo Therriault, “were incredibly lucky, this could have been a totally different story,” Sophia Therriault added.
Sophia Therriault’s bedroom, right under her parents’ bedroom, was also ruined. “Pipes burst so water leaked into my older sister’s bedroom,” Isabelle Therriault said.
Everything in Sophia Therriault’s room was taken out and the carpet and inner walls were taken down. “Her room is nothing but concrete now,” Isabelle Therriault added.
Isabelle Therriault’s room “had a few cracks in her walls” even though it was right next to her parents’ room.
The Therriault family lived in hotel suites for two weeks and moved into a rental house Sept. 15. “We still don’t know if we’re just going to get the house redone, or if we want to remodel,” Isabelle Therriault said.
If they have it redone they are planning on moving back in within six months. They are not sure when they will be able to move back in if they have the house remodeled.
