The freshman volleyball team is experiencing greater success than last year’s freshman team, which finished with a record of 8-6.
Defeated only twice so far, the fall 2011 season is off to a good start for the young team.
Coached by Dorothy Brown, the team has played 10 matches so far, with eight of the wins with a score of 2-0.
“I’m trying to develop the individual player … and put them in a position that fits their skills,” Brown said.
The team’s record has been on par with its JV counterpart, which lost to Thomas Jefferson High School for Science and Technology and Stone Bridge high school, respectively. The team is also ahead of the varsity team, which is currently 1-9.
The freshmen team’s first loss, against TJHSST, was on Sept. 27.
The game went back and forth, with TJHSST winning the first set and Marshall winning the second. TJHSST was able to win the final set, ending the freshman team’s winning streak.
The loss was a “disappointment” to the girls, but they have developed a strong support system to get through it, according to defensive specialist and right side hitter Yasmin Molavi, freshman.
“We know each other so well, we’re like family,” said Molavi.
The team’s next match is on Oct. 19 against Langley High School.
Maintaining a winning season will be challenging, but Brown believes that as long as the girls maintain a strong focus and mentality, the wins will come.
Brown added that the main purpose of the game is not to win, but to “enjoy the experience.”
“I play volleyball as an outlet,” Molavi said. “I can let out emotion and stress. Whatever I’m dealing with, I can let it out on the court. It’s freedom.”
The team played at South Lakes High School yesterday.
