The girls varsity soccer team finished off the season with a 2-9-1 record, which, according to sophomore Kimberly Gollogly, does not properly reflect the team’s growth. “At the beginning our form and positioning was a little iffy, but we’ve definitely grown together in that respect,” varsity player and senior Courtney Herbolsheimer said via email. “We improved,” Gollogly said, but “the other teams just got better.” Only one player graduated from the team last year, leaving the team nearly unchanged from the 2010 spring season. Having many of the same players as last year, Gollogly said, gave the team the opportunity to work on their skills rather than just work on training a new team. JV player and sophomore Maggie Schumann said that a team of mostly returning members gave “them the opportunity to improve on their style of play and make it more consistent.” This year, the senior heavy team will be losing eight graduating players, leaving the team with open defense positions in the 2012 season. “A lot of the freshman that tried out this year were very strong,” Gollogly said. Gollogly said that open spots will give the current freshman and JV players the opportunity to move up from the JV team to the varsity team in next season. Herbolsheimer said that this year’s team had “a really solid group of girls” and that despite losing many of the varsity players, she said “JV will be able to fill in.” “Hopefully some of the JV players that are ready are going to move up to varsity and give it some new life next year,” Schumann said. “Many of us are looking forward to moving up and working hard on varsity.” According to Herbolsheimer, the team focused their final practices of the season on playing McLean in the district tournament on Monday, the results of which were unavailable as of press time.
