Model United Nations (MUN) members attended a National High School Model Arab League (NHSMAL) conference on Friday and Saturday at Georgetown University, representing Jordan and Palestine. Results of the conference were not available as of press time.
This event attracted MUN members of Arab decent, in particular.
“We look at [NHSMAL] as an opportunity for many of our Arab [members],” MUN sponsor Tom Brannan said. “They have an opportunity to discuss issues important to [the] Arab world.”
MUN members also participated in a Technology-focused conference on April 9 and 10 at Thomas Jefferson High School for Science and Technology. The Technology conference provided participants with a simulation of the United Nations General Assembly?s crisis response system. Crisis committees challenged their members to “develop crisis situations” for the representatives of each country to work through, Brannan said.
The delegation consisting of juniors Mike Breger, Ali Rosenbluth and Philip Grudier received first place gavels at the conference. Breger and Rosenbluth won a gavel for their representation of Japan in the Disarmament and Security Committee while Grudier won a gavel for his representation of the People of Wei in the Three Kingdoms of China simulation.
According to Brannan, this year has “been successful in terms of underclassmen gaining experience.”
“Next year, we?re definitely going to have people who can win gavels and who have skills in public speaking,” sophomore Elizabeth Yu said.
